I had always been a regular at Mumbai-based restaurateur par excellence, Farrokh Khambatta’s erstwhile restaurant JOSS, which, in my opinion, was one of the best Pan-Asian restaurants in the city. When Joss closed down, the city’s foodies lamented. But Farrokh opened up Umame at Churchgate’s iconic Eros building soon after, which was met with great reviews. Umame’s extensive menu now reflects his passion for diverse Pan Asian food, showcasing authenticity and the flavours of Asia, going off the beaten path from regular Indian Chinese food. An important part of Umame’s menu is the ‘Sushi Sashimi’ section. I am usually extremely cynical about trying out Sushi in Mumbai but I have been to Umame several times and have always raved.
June 18 was celebrated as International Sushi Day and some of us lucky foodies were invited to sample a special menu at Umame, hosted by Farrokh Khambatta himself. At the lunch, attended by Mumbai’s socialite swish set, he showcased the new ‘Sushi Boat’s on the menu. The idea behind this: rather than poring endlessly over a complicated sushi menu, toiling over the order, patrons can just order a vegetarian or non-vegetarian sushi boat, which arrives at your table, with a beautiful spread of sushi, presented beautifully as it should be.
Here’s what you can expect if you order at Sushi Boat at Umame
The Non Vegetarian sushi boat comes with Tempura Prawn with Asparagus and Snow Crab rolls, Tempura Rolls of Wild Alaskan Salmon and Avocado, Rainbow Rolls – California Rolls with Salmon, Tuna, Prawns and Avocado, Marinated Tuna with Chives, Asparagus and Creamy Spicy Sauce , Ikarami – Salmon Loin.
The vegetarians need not panic. (and yes, vegetarians too can enjoy sushi just in case you were wondering) You can look forward to Carrot and Onion Tempura with Creamy Spicy Sauce, Korean Kimchi Rolls – Spicy Kimchi with Rice and Toasted Sesame Seeds, Futomaki of Tofu, Asparagus, Shitake Mushrooms and Carrots with Japanese Pickles, Rice paper mango rolls -Mango, Avocado, Cucumber , Ginger And Vegetarian Sushi
My verdict on the sushi boat: Great presentation, perfectly textured, fresh cuts of fish. The other sushi/rolls were perfect too. It’s a good idea to order a sushi boat between two people as the portion is quite big, with a very good selection.
