Beverly Hills Polo Club: Of Jersey Shorts, White Shirts and Sky Blue Chinos

As all of you might have already guessed, my casual style is unapologetically preppy. And therefore, indirectly, I absolutely love to stock up on clothes that reflect a nautical, polo, golf or university aesthetic – basically, the spirit of Americana style – something that the American brands do par excellence. I have already written volumes on nautical print shirts, pique cotton polos, linen shorts and pinstriped trousers, which oh-so-beautifully capture the essence of American preppy style.

I recently stepped into the Beverly Hills Polo Club store at Mumbai’s Infinity Mall to check out what was on offer. Let me begin by saying just how thrilled I was to see so many different clothes in my favourite colours – grey, navy blue, red, black and white.
The store has, as you would expect, a wide range of polo tees in different colours.
I was also particularly impressed by the selection of classic white button-down shirts. The white shirts have a discreet brand logo, designed in different colours, each with a matching pair of cotton trousers. So you could wear a white shirt with a sky blue logo, paired with chinos in the very same blue.

There they are, those lovely shirts with the tiny logo in different colours, to be paired with pants in the same colour.

However, in this blogpost I’d like to focus on something that I discovered at the Beverly Hills Polo Club store. I have shied away from it in the past, but I have begun warming up to this season – I am talking about the ubiquitous pair of jersey shorts.

My new staple bottom wear piece. Indispensable like chino shorts.

I decided to opt for the most tried and tested of all jersey colours – grey. I am not ashamed to say that I am obsessed with grey in my wardrobe. If you were to ask me what is my favourite colour combination of all, I’d probably say ‘grey and blue’ without batting an eyelid. So here goes. I tried on this pair of grey shorts with a classic navy polo. There’s isn’t much style innovation going on here, but hey, it is oh-so-cool!

Grey and navy blue. You can never go wrong.

I love the quality of the fabric on these shorts and the thick drawstrings that make it so much more attractive.

I then decided to move away from the predictable confines of grey shorts to a pair of flaming red shorts, which, in my opinion, paired impeccably with a white polo.
Even when it comes to chinos, I don’t own too many bright coloured pairs, but I somehow have taken a liking to this soft jersey cotton fabric.

I chose to sport my bright green Swatch watch strap to add to the colour block effect.

I am totally digging the American flag detail on the button of this polo

I would probably rate this look as one-step more dressy than a beach-boy look.

Cotton shorts and a polo tee – a perfect staple for a casual weekend outing, where you want to look chic but not too underdressed. Striking a right balance indeed!
