Before I begin discussing my Crushing On section featuring the Breitling Super Avenger Military watch, I;d like to give you guys a small backgrounder. Of all the luxury watch brands out there, I can safely count the ones that I truly adore on my fingertips. These are the ones that I identify with at a personal level and take great pleasure in wearing, admiring from afar and, of course, writing about. Breitling is one such watch. If you know me well enough, you’ll probably guess why. Yes… it is the aviator connection. Being the avid traveller and airplane geek that I am, Breitling watches have always managed to catch my fancy thanks to their strong aviation connect. It seems to have become a cult watch brand among aviators – commercial pilots, fighter pilots and, plebeians like me, the grounded airplane geeks. In fact, aviators lauded Breitling for having made the most precise chronometers, which they were able to use in-flight, long before the days of computerised controls. Even today, many aviators across the globe find their uniform and shoulder stripes incomplete and inadequate without a Breitling chronometer on their wrist. On a broader level, there is this whole element of adventure attached to this age-old brand, which was established in the Swiss town of Grenchen in 1884.
And this brings me to our ‘Crushing On’ section. This watchmaking marvel – christened the Breitling Super Avenger Military — has instantly made it to the top of my objects of desire list. And it isn’t hard to see why. First of all, it is super exclusive: it has been released in a limited edition of only 500 pieces.
What strikes you first is its black, rugged appearance, owing to its hard steel case with a black carbon coating. This black body, featuring a chic matte finish, perfectly complements the ultra-durable fabric strap, which is itself inspired by the durable straps used by military forces across the globe. (Note: I am usually quite accustomed to seeing Breitling’s bearing metal or leather straps. This fabric strap comes as quite a pleasant change. And if you ask me, it looks pretty swell on this whole rugged, military look. Of course, I will wait to actually wear the watch on my wrist to decide if I prefer the fabric or the metal/leather. For now, I’m kinda diggin’ the fabric strap). What I also like is the fact that the watch is so easily readable, because of the large hands and indicators, which actually serves the purpose of an adventure watch pretty well. The body is crowned by a sapphire crystal cover – glareproof, of course. The Breitling Super Avenger Military also features a unique 24-hour ‘military time’ display.
If you’re interested in the technical details, then you might want to know that this instrument comes equipped with a self-winding movement chronometer, which has received a certification from the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), which is the highest benchmark for this kind of watch model. And in case you are planning on actually taking on the seven seas with this watch around your wrist, you will be happy to know that the Breitling Super Avenger Military is water resistant to a depth of 300m.
All I can say is… I’m in love…
