I have said this before and I will say it again…desert boots have made it to the top of my favourite footwear list – loafers come a close second – for the past year. The desert boots, also referred to as chukka boots, are, as its name suggests, ideal for an expedition in the sand dunes or in the outback. This ankle boot usually comes in suede or calfskin – in brown, beige, grey and even navy blue. However, these days, it has shrugged off its ‘outdoorsy image’ and assumed a new role – indispensable footwear for every chic city boy. In fact, I find that it is a suitable alternative to any regular leather lace-up shoes. And when they’re worn with dark blue denims – they are FLAWLESS.
So if you have to look sharp at your workplace and are too tired with your boring leather Oxfords or Brogues…and want to tone it down just one level…desert boots are your best bet. In my mind, on the formality scale, it sits somewhere between a leather lace-up and a canvas sneaker (which you shouldn’t be wearing to work, at least not during the week).
Thanks to Hush Puppies, I got my hands on two brand new pairs of suede desert boots to add to my collection. And I am delighted.
Here’s what they look like.
And I got this second pair in brownish green camel suede and I was wondering what’d I’d pair it with. I did say that desert boots are now an ‘urban boy’s’ staple but I think you can sport a slightly rugged look with a nice checked shirt or, as I did here, a super comfy flannel shirt from CottonOn.
And like all fine things – upkeep is a must. Suede gets dirty pretty quickly and that’s when it starts looking dull and shabby. Use a neutral coloured suede cleaner or try to get your hands on one of those spray-on suede protectors.
Now that I’ve dished out enough advice on the right footwear, I can’t wait to pull up offenders…there is no excuse for bad shoes, dear brothers! Stay stylish…I know I will..
