GQ Men of the Year 2015 Awards — Insider’s Report

The smell of cologne loomed heavy in the air, while bow-ties, brogues and Breitlings were the accessories du jour at the GQ Men of the Year 2015 Awards, held last week in Mumbai, in association with Chivas Studio. As you would expect, when GQ throws a party, you can expect everyone to show up pressed and dressed, ready for a good time. The result:a slew of dapper gents filling every vacant space of the grand ballroom at the Grand Hyatt hotel. In addition to the GQ Men of the Year, the monthly men’s fashion bible was also celebrating its 7th anniversary with absolute gusto. The theme for the evening was ‘wired’. Later that evening, I chatted with GQ India’s Editor, Che Kurrien who told me that, “the wired theme reflects the digital age where we live, work and play. Each of our accomplished winners has been shot within this theme.” I couldn’t think of a more relevant theme.

In keeping with the luxurious spirit of the evening, the tipple of choice was Chivas Regal – in my opinion, a perfect brand fit and collaboration for the magazine and the alcohol brand.
Here is a quick look at the evening through my eyes…

The host for the evening, Cyrus Sahukar, did have us in splits with his wit and unapologetic sense of humour.

Since our very raison d’etre at the party was to honour men from different walks of life for their exemplary contribution to their respective fields, we were promptly ushered into the rather dignified presentation ceremony. Here is a look at the 2015 winners in different categories.

While the men did enjoy their place in the sun, the ladies were not to be outdone that night. GQ honoured Deepika Padukone with Woman of the Year.

One of the most understated stars of the evening was Rahul Bose, a quintessential GQ man, and one of our favourite celebrities, won (what is in my opinion, the most prestigious award of all). This award was particularly interesting this time as I learnt from Kartik Mahindra, of Pernod Ricard India, “This year, we have introduced the philanthropy segment by Chivas Regal for the very first time. We wish to award Rahul Bose for having achieved success whilst making a positive impact on the lives of others and for embodying the spirit of winning the right way.”

Philanthropist of the Year for his tireless work for social causes.

And finally, Akshay Kumar -- who seems to be looking younger and fitter with time -- was given the award for Ultimate GQ man.

Once the awards ceremony was done and dusted, it was now time for some fun, some more Chivas Regal and, of course, some style spotting.

I did catch a glimpse of Deepika Padukone, in a breathtaking Gaurav Gupta Couture gown, just before she left the venue. She gets a BIG thumbs up from me for her red carpet look.

One of my favourite GQ boys, Ayushman Khurana, who never ever disappoints in the style department, thought that a selfie might be a good idea.

Ayushmann's double-breasted Canali suit gets a thumbs up from me. And as always, he is impeccably accessorised.

I bumped into the very dapper Sohel Lalvani, accessories designer and owner of TheBrocode.in - It is always a pleasure to see how this guy shows up on the red carpet, accessorised to the hit with clothes that are tailored to perfection.

Just in case you're wondering about my ensemble for the evening, I sported an ensemble by SS HOMME, which featured a classic cashmere single-breasted suit, a solid shirt and a statement wooden scissor bow-tie. Tan brogues by Tresmode.
Just in case you were wondering about my ensemble for the evening, I sported a nifty ensemble by SS HOMME, which featured a grey cashmere and worsted wool slim-fitted, two-button, peak lapel suit, with an intricate diamond weave. The suit, with fabric sourced at an Italian mill, was accentuated with a metal lapel pin and a statement scissor wooden bow-tie. Tan brogues by Tresmode.

I'm not one to be immodest, but I have to say that my wooden scissor bow-tie, really was the most talked-about accessory of the evening.

The afterparty continued at China House, till the wee hours. The GQ Men of the Year awards evening turned out to be everything that I expected – a heady blend of luxury, men’s fashion, glitz, glamour, great music and, of course, fine spirits. It was a worthy celebration of the good life.
