In my opinion, there are a few fashion essentials that just refuse to go out of style. A perfect example of this is the ubiquitous Levi’s Denim Jacket. Like a white shirt, and a pair of comfy loafers, it is a wardrobe must-have, as it is timeless and uber-chic.
As an avid traveller, I also find that Levi’s Denim Jacket is an indispensable part of my travel gear purely because it is so versatile and can instantly jazz up absolutely anything. You could literally be wearing your shabbiest tee-shirt underneath and board a flight looking absolutely dapper.
I was invited recently to the massive Levi’s store on Linking Road in Mumbai to a small event that was an homage of sorts to this iconic jacket. At this event, I would get better acquainted with the heritage of this brand (I have been faithfully wearing their jeans for more than twenty years), and understand why the Levi’s Denim Jacket has assumed such iconic proportions. Throughout the store I could see beautiful images of people ‘living the Levi’s lifestyle’ wish the #LiveInLevis adage prominently displayed all over.
While I was at it, I also managed to glance at another one of my wardrobe staples – the denim shirt.
I then proceeded to what the guys at Levi’s called the Levi’s Tailor Shop, where I would choose a plain denim jacket and then add a personal touch. This process of customisation would involve choosing from a large variety of patches, coloured elements and embellishments corresponding to my personality.
I initially thought of putting my initials ‘RG’ discreetly at the back, unfortunately the store ran out of R’s, so I dropped the idea.
I then began to rummage through the options to see what elements I would choose to customise my jacket. What do I love most in life? Music, airplanes, computers, fashion…
I was lucky, they did have a few music-related patches, which I jumped on.
I chose a patch of this audio cassette to represent the 80s and 90s. Incidentally, I wore a lot of denim jackets in that very same era, when I was a kid.
I also added a bright red ‘Music’ patch and embellished it with two white stars to give it a nice retro look. The red patch against the grainy blue of the jacket was a perfect combination.
My favourite element of the Levi’s Denim Jacket has got to be the cool pockets, with the signature embossed Levi’s button. So I chose to leave the pocket area untouched.
And that’s how I got my very own Levi’s Denim Jacket in Mumbai.
This jacket is going to be one of my staples this winter, and I shall be sporting it over chinos and over denims as well. Stay tuned to see some more posts on this.
