Do I love checked shirts? YES YES YES
Today, I’d like to touch upon one of my favourite style essentials, which is in my opinion, an indispensable part of your wardrobe – your trusty, checked shirts. I cannot begin to tell you how many checked shirts I own in every possible colour. My checks could vary from tartans and plaids, Madras checks and even the uber-comfy flannel checks. But, this season, I’ve developed a soft spot for another kind of check, which not many are familiar with – Gingham checks. Coming to think of it, it is actually quite a common pattern, just that people don’t know what it’s called. Gingham checks, pronounced ging-am, are a kind of check pattern on dyed cotton fabric or cotton blended yarn. The dual-coloured fabric forms an interesting, geometric pattern of checks, in which it is unable to tell the right and wrong with respect to colour. Cynics might refer to gingham checks as ‘tablecloth’ material, but few can see that it truly does make a timeless style statement.
While many brands do release their version of gingham checked shirts, my favourites come from the American brand GANT. I own two gingham checked shirts by GANT and unhesitatingly wear it over formal trousers, jeans and even shorts. I sported a classic blue and white version, in a slim fit to Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai recently and chose to offset it with white Zara trousers. Here’s what it looked like.
