As I stepped into the decidedly masculine premises of Truefitt & Hill Mumbai, I was thrilled to see the staff clad in white short-sleeved shirts, waistcoats and ties, and not in those all-black Manhattan-meets-Paris-style ensembles that you see at salons across the globe. And expectedly so… I was NOT in a salon. I was in a barbershop. And ideally, that’s how barbers should dress up. A word of advice: if you’re unfamiliar with Truefitt and Hill, let me warn you. You must not commit the travesty of referring to it as a salon or write their staff off as hairstylists. Because that’s exactly what they are not! Expert barbers they have been, ever since the chain opened up in London in 1805, and expert barbers they are, even today.
Back to my experience at Truefitt and Hill Mumbai, I really couldn’t contain my excitement. Well, what do you expect, when an iconic name in men’s grooming sets up shop in his city, slap bang in the middle of Linking Road, Bandra? The barbers at Truefitt have been snipping away at the scalps of stylish men since the reign of King George III in the early 19th century, from their shop in London and, today, they are global authorities on men’s grooming. (and trust me, we do need more of these). They specialise in haircuts, as you would expect, as well as the fine art of shaving, shaving apparatus, with the brush et al. In today’s fast paced world, where an after-shower shave at home takes no more than two minutes, it is rather nice to enjoy the luxury of sitting in a comfy barber’s chair, have the foam slathered all over your cheeks and let a cut-throat rasor run over your face, to make you look spiffy. Here are a few pictures of my fleeting visit to the space.
Anyway, if you plan to visit Truefitt and Hill Mumbai anytime soon, I suggest you block out a few hours of your schedule to really be able to enjoy the services and check out what’s on offer. Well, for starters they’ve got this really AMAZING retail-cum-reception area where you can check out a whole gamut of razors, brushes and other apparatus associated with your morning shave. Then there’s all the pre-shave, shave and after-shave products (a ritual that any gentleman worth his salt must follow as assiduously as possible).
While I did spend some time at this pedicure station getting my feet pampered, I decided to take a raincheck on my haircut and shave, as my hair was way too short to be barbered. You guys will just have to wait for my next post to see what the Grooming Guru has to say about it.
In case you’re visiting Truefitt and Hill Mumbai, which you must, it’s on Linking Road in Bandra, right above Dunkin Donuts.
Till then, stay stylish, stay groomed!
