There was BIG news from the luxury industry this weekend. The stalwarts of Indian luxury fashion Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla hosted a spectacular show in Delhi to further establish their presence in the Indian luxury wedding market. The star-studded affair saw the who’s who of Delhi society (socialites, actors, luxury consumers et al), clink their glasses of G. H. Mumm as lavishly dressed models showcased couture pieces from the designer duo’s latest collection.
The ethereal setting featured a glitzy centre stage, lined with Indian wedding flowers, and the show panned out in five sequences. Each wedding ritual, from the engagement to the haldi and finally the main shaadi, was beautifully portrayed through these capsule collections.
At an Abu Sandeep show, one does not expect too much in terms of novel silhouettes and unnecessary innovation – it’s all about classic elegance and sophistication. The designers have a distinct aesthetic and do not seek to prove anything. The colour palette revolved largely around a soft cream, gold and white theme. Models walked the ramp, flanked by contemporary dance performers and artistes resembling sufi whirlers.
The most pleasant surprise for me was the menswear – while they have been doing menswear for a while, I absolutely loved the silhouettes that I saw. This one black and white embroidered sherwani was the standout piece while I saw a lot of fluid, skirt-like drapes, paired with tailored, embellished jackets. I am definitely going to keep my eyes on the duo to see what they will be doing with menswear in the next few seasons. I’m really impressed!
The belle of the ball was, of course, Sonal Kapoor, who appeared as a rather understated bride in a “Burano” bridal lehenga, inspired by the city of Genice. The lehenga was fashioned with sublime self-coloured embroidery, generously encrusted with crystals from Swarovski.
Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla shared their thoughts with us, “We are delighted with how spectacularly it all turned out. This collection is our most ambitious and extravagant to date. Impossibly romantic and utterly refined, it was created to break our own artistic bar. Our shared mission was to create the ultimate wedding experience and set a new standard of excellence, customisation and celebration. We hope that together we have brought the Fantasy Wedding alive.”
After the show, the glitzy party spilled on over to the wee hours, with lots of flowing champagne and an exclusive after party. A good time was had by all, needless to say!
