Insider’s View: #GroomingGuru at the GQ Best Dressed Men Party

Now I know that a lot of you readers out there are curious to know just what it feels like to attend one of the most fashionable parties in Mumbai’s social calendar. So I decided to pen down this blogpost just to give you a personal, insider’s perspective on the GQ Best Dressed Men party, which took place in Mumbai last month. Earlier on, right after the party, I had done a post on what I wore to the event. If you have’t already checked it out, here it is. Before you read on, let me remind you that this post is not so much about the Best Dressed Men’s list, nor is it about the candidates etc, because much has already been written about it. I aim to give you guys a first-hand account of what I experienced at the party with, of course, a dose of decoding looks, since that’s what I love most. Enjoy the read.

What do Akshay Kumar, Arjun Kapoor, Imran Khan, Karan Johar, Rajkumar Rao, Varun Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Vir Das and Nico Goghavala have in common besides the fact that they are all exemplary in the dapper department? They, along with 40 others have been chosen as the GQ Best Dressed Men in India for the year 2015. Before I start, let me tell you that the names mentioned above have been chosen randomly and in no particular order, for I cant possibly start my blogpost by naming all 50 of the candidates. (These also happen to be my favourites…but shushhh). Just like every year, the folks at GQ, the men’s fashion bible, threw a lavish bash at the Four Seasons Mumbai. This well-attended soiree was a celebration of style and sartorial elegance in all its splendour. We did spot quite a few celebrities and stylish gentlemen all around, and that goes without saying…

As the Grey Goose cocktails flowed copiously, it was time to kick start the party and welcome India's most fashionable men.

Bowties, brogues and buffed gentlemen at the bar. Stylish alliterations abound, at the very start of the evening. (Do I spot Nico Goghavala ordering himself a drink?)

Imran Khan was one of the first to arrive. Now this guy, in my opinion, is one of the most stylish men in India. I tweeted out his British-college-inspired look, which was met with mixed reactions. Personally, I think he rocked this blazer-striped tie look.

I got chatting with Imran, and reminisced about some fun interviews we had done together in the past. I complimented him on his preppy ensemble featuring a Tom Ford blazer and his tie, which, as he told me, was from a British brand, Charles Thyrwitt.

Looking dashing in a Hugo Boss suit and a gingham checked shirt by Thomas Pink was Anil Kapoor. I didn't much care for his striped Thomas Pink tie, but his Brooks Brothers tie square completed the look effortlessly.

I managed to chat up Anil Kapoor for a few minutes. He told me that he loves wearing single-breasted suits and always accessorises well.

I also liked Akshay Oberoi's simple but trendy look. He rocked this double-breasted suit with a pair of sneakers and made it look snazzy indeed.

Another dapper appearance that evening was Sohel Lalvani, designer of The Brocode, one of India's coolest new men's accessories brands. A sharp suit, paired with even sharper accessories.

I spotted Rajkumar Rao walking in as well. I've followed this talented actor's career and style curve closely. I like how he retains his 'shy boy' identity and still asserts himself with a simple, urban sense of style.

In walked Narendra Kumar, looking edgy as ever in a cotton suit, a tee and gorgeous white slip-ons. A contemporary style guru, in my opinion. Nari gets my thumbs up.

And that's when THIS happened. Ranveer Singh walked in, with no F***s to give, sporting a tiger-print bathrobe, outrageous pyjamas and bedroom pantoufles. This picture went viral on Twitter that evening and got several lakh views.

The star of the evening, Akshay Kumar, rocking a Superdry singlet with a navy suit and tan loafers. Akki's style quotient seems to be getting better with time.

This was one of the evening's OMG moments. Akshay Kumar and Ranveer Singh (on two opposite poles of the style spectrum) having a little tete-a-tete. The lady in the background can't seem to believe her eyes.

Talk about chalk and cheese (I mean it in a good way, I promise). Bathrobe Ranveer and Gingham Anil.

I also had some fun with some of my friends who work at GQ. Posing here with the lovely Mala from the magazine's marketing team. (Inside secret: we are usually selfie partners, but decided to do a normal stand-up picture together instead).
