Men and jewellery — the quintessential million-dollar quandary. For as long as we can remember, men have had a love-hate relationship with jewellery. In the recent past, however, the most noteworthy trend in men’s jewellery is that of Platinum jewellery.
This luxurious white metal has managed to attract the attention of discerning gentlemen for obvious reasons — its understated elegance, high quality and classy appearance.
It therefore comes as no surprise that, today, platinum jewellery has emerged as a major men’s trend and is establishing itself as a serious player in the precious metal market.
What, then, makes platinum jewellery so precious, luxurious and expensive, you ask? Well, for starters, it is found in very few places around the world. Platinum is 30 times rarer than gold due to which it can never displace gold or other precious metals. It is also considered to be an excellent store of value.
It therefore comes as no surprise that some of our celebs have jumped onto the platinum bandwagon. Actor Irfan Khan was spotted recently endorsing jewellery brand Abaran’s platinum line for men. The actor tells us that he is particularly fond of platinum as he does not have to restrict his activities while wearing a platinum ring or bracelet. “Its unchanging quality ensures that it will last a lifetime, which is why I love it so much.” Similarly, the likes of boxer Vijender Singh and even the fashion forward actor Ayushmann Khurana were spotted wearing elegant rings and bracelets in platinum. Our sources tell us that Vijender is particularly fond of his collection of platinum rings, bracelets and cufflinks. There’s also a wave of international male celebrities sporting platinum jewellery.
I chatted with Vaishali Banerjee, Country Manager India, Platinum Guild International, who had this to say, “High involvement in jewellery purchases, research on designs, trends etc. prove that today’s man is at ease when choosing jewellery. Through the ages, the most discerning men have preferred platinum for their jewellery. Today, young Indian men are not only looking at bands in platinum, but are also taking to platinum chains and bracelets The look and weight appeal to men as it is very sophisticated and elegant. It is a dense metal and its inherent strength can be sculpted into unique designs. ”
Similarly, Vijay Jain, CEO, ORRA tells me, “The modern successful Indian man is very confident. The platinum trend is reflective of his increasingly global outlook. They are now at ease when indulging in jewellery purchases. The heft and weight of the naturally white metal platinum can make for a significant piece of jewellery without signs of being ostentatious.”
So as things stand, platinum retail in India has grown from 2 manufacturers and 15 retailers in 2000, to 15 manufacturers and over 860 retailers. If you’re looking to shop for platinum these are your best options — Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Joyalukkas, TBZ – The Original, ORRA and GRT Jewellers.
So could we possibly see more Indian bridegrooms replacing traditional gold rings with platinum rings? We’ll just have to wait and watch.
