When US First Lady Michelle Obama made the world gasp by appearing at the Oscars recently, to present the award for Best Picture, we all got talking about her stunning Naeem Khan gown. The designer has been a regular name on Hollywood red carpets in the past few seasons and we couldn’t have been happier to have seen his show on Day Two at Lakme Fashion Week 2013.
The simplest way to describe the collection, right from the start is ultra-glam and super-chic.
The silhouettes were rather simple but it was the cuts and the intricacy of the work that made each creation truly spectacular. The collection showcased dresses, gowns, jackets and each and every one of them was a piece of art. There was something for every woman out there. The embellishments, the kind of detailing, the typical Naeem Khan cuts and finishing made the collection stand out.
My jaw dropped the moment I saw the first black and white embellished garment appear on stage. It was nothing short of perfect, in fact maybe even that is an understatement. The designer’s in depth knowledge of embroideries and textiles was reflected in each creation.
The printed dresses where the use of floral motifs worked really well. There was a substantial amount of solid colours like red and blue that was used. I loved the high collars that glittered with crystals, the royal velvet jackets with intricate embroidery; the use of fur was done so tastefully too. The skinny pants that appeared under wrap skirts were paired with boleros and embroidered cape gowns.
The last creation that appeared on stage took me by surprise. It was a multi-striped draped gown that looked so gracious and it certainly was a good way to end the show.
Naeem Khan is one designer who’s on everyone’s lips, on everyone’s mind and one everyone’s body; quite literally! I was very happy with what I saw.
I guess we need more designers like Naeem Khan to showcase in our country. What do you think of the collection guys?
