Here at UrbanEye, we are always on the lookout for interesting stuff that’s happening at our favourite airlines. Colombo-based SriLankan airlines happens to be one of my favourite international airlines (more on that later). I do follow their social plages quite closely and love their updates, which always make me nostalgic about my beloved Sri Lanka, a country that I cherish ever so much. A little over a week ago, I chanced upon a campaign on their social platforms which caught my interest. It was put up for World Parents’ Day (24th June). So I delved deeper into this video to find out the story. And here’s what I learnt.
In December 2015, SriLankan Airlines called for entries for their ‘Green and Win’ contest. Angela Menezes from Kerala sent in her entry not knowing that she would be chosen. The contest required her (and all participants) to produce a Christmas/seasonal greeting and share it on the SriLankan Airlines Greet and Win contest page. Angela promptly sent in a video of herself singing a Christmas carol When asked what she would do if she won the contest (and the coveted return air tickets to Sri Lanka), she sweetly expressed a desire to take her father back to the country, where he spent a significant part of his childhood. Also, it was here that he met his future wife.
I did some further digging and traced the story back to the 1940s, when Mosin Menezes, Angela’s dad, from Kerala, was a student at St. Peter’s College. Back then, it was still called Ceylon and not Sri Lanka.
After returning to India, Mosin made a life for himself by becoming a famous jazz pianist. He married the girl of his dreams and went on to have two daughters.
All along, at the back of his mind, there remained a niggling desire to return to Sri Lanka one last time and visit the places of his childhood, especially his school.
It all fell into place when Angela bagged the winning spot in the SriLankan Airlines contest. What’s more, it was not just a return air ticket but a dream holiday through Sri Lanka. The airline’s partner hotel, Jetwing, created a special itinerary and holiday package just for them.
On the first day of their tour, Mosin and his daughter, Angela were taken on a tour of Colombo to the places from his childhood. It was a trip down memory lane and included a visit to his school, St. Peter’s College and the street he lived on. They were also taken to the newer shopping addresses such as Odel and Arcade and enjoyed lunch at the SriLankan Catering restaurant, Semondu.
They then went on to southern and central Sri Lanka. A bit of whale watching and a trip to the Galle Fort (possibly my favourite place in Sri Lanka), which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This was followed up to the gorgeous hill town of Nuwara Eliya, where they partook of the thriving tea culture on the plantations and even an elegant high tea at Jetwing Warwick. A round of golf
Visited Gregory’s Lake and Lover’s leap waterfall
And finally, they went up to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s spiritual heart, on the famous train journey, said to be one of the most breathtakingly beautiful train journeys in the world.
If you haven’t already seen this video, I’m posting a link for you.
The video moved me and I identify with it in many ways. I first visited Sri Lanka 5 years ago and I formed an immediate bond with it, with a constant longing to go back. This year itself (2016) I have already made five trips back to this emerald island, I so fondly call my own.
Kudos to SriLankan Airlines for letting me (and all of us) see this magnificent country through your eyes!
