I’ve made over 20 trips to Singapore (on work and on pleasure) and I’d like to think that I know the city fairy well, along with its secret hangouts and undiscovered restaurants. But Singapore being the gourmet hub that it is, you can never really get away with such a thought. There’s always something new, something that you don’t know.
A friend recommended that I try this small, fairly popular pancake joint called Strictly Pancakes and that’s just what I did on a recent trip there.
Located in a tiny lane near the Dhoby Ghaut, Plaza Singapura metro station and mall respectively, Strictly Pancakes is in an old-fashioned Singapore-style bungalow with an entrance that is easy to miss.
I went there on a Saturday afternoon and there were people queueing up to get a table. Mostly locals. There were very few tourists. I’m sorry Singaporeans but I just have to share this undiscovered treasure with my fellow travellers.
The restaurant is tiny and intimate, perhaps not more than a dozen tables. In the corner, there is a skylight with a low couch for people to unwind and enjoy a cup of coffee after a pancake binge.
The menu features sweet and savoury pancakes as well as a pancake stack that can be paired with salted or unsalted butter and a host of toppings — Canadian maple syrup, bacon, corned beef, mushrooms etc.
I veered towards the Sweet Pancakes menu. My choices: Strawberry and Co. with mixed berries, cream and strawberry coulis served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. OR caramelised apples and cinnamon.
I ended up ordering Bananas Scotched: Pancakes with Caramelised Bananas sizzled in a pan with rum, served with vanilla ice cream.
Here’s what it looked like.
I accompanied this with a peanut butter milkshake. How decadent!
My verdict: Absolute perfection! The chef was clearly very generous with the rum. The classic caramel-banana combination with the delightful texture of the pancakes made this the highlight of my day.
I was pleased with the meal and I would DEFINITELY go back. Strictly Pancakes is now part of my Singapore gourmet trail.
