As the #GroomingGuru, it is my job to tell guys – or at least suggest – what’s cool and what’s not. As many of you know, I travel across the globe extensively. One of the things that I most look forward to in a journey is dressing up for it. I absolutely love airplanes and airports, and I am one of those who still believes that air travel needs to be enjoyed in style. I personally don’t approve of people showing up on international flights in shorts and flip flops, but then, it’s a free world and we aren’t here to judge anybody. That said, I’d like to show you some of my key travel essentials for men. These are my recommendations to all you trendy travellers out there.. Enjoy the read…
I wouldn’t recommend very tight jeans, for a long flight as they can sometimes get uncomfortable. Instead, a pair of comfortable cotton chinos works best – preferably one that doesn’t crease easily. Chinos look smart and are easy to travel in. No track pants for me – but that’s my opinion. Comfort fit jeans come a close second.
The Charm of a Button-down Shirt
When I travel abroad, I always opt for a shirt over a tee-shirt. It just looks more elegant on a gentleman, even if it is a casual cotton shirt, with sleeves rolled up effortlessly. I’m talking about casual cotton shirts here.
A Smart Jacket ALWAYS works
If you’re lucky enough to be travelling in First or Business Class, or if you’re going to a destination that might be cold when you land, I suggest you sport a chic semi-formal blazer, a denim jacket or even a fitted bomber jacket. It always adds a touch of sophistication to your ensemble.
A Hoodie Keeps You Warm
If you intend to catch up on your sleep, or if you’re in one of those fancy airline flat-bed seats, I recommend you change into a comfy cardigan or hoodie, raise up the hood and snuggle yourself to sleep. It’s the best feeling ever. You’ll never catch me on any flight without my classic grey hoodie. It’s my wardrobe staple, which is always in my travel bag.
Loafing Around In Loafers
Call me old-fashioned, but I am just not comfortable wearing sneakers, sandals or flip flops on an international flight. I somehow like the idea of being elegant during a journey. After all, you never know who might be sitting next to you, and the last thing you’d want is to look like you’re fresh off a Goan flea market, on a flight to Paris. Loafers, for me, are perfect travel footwear, as they strike the right balance between casual, comfortable, chic and elegant.
My Crazy Sock Fetish
If I am wearing loafers, I don’t usually wear socks, however I do make an exception on long-haul flights, as we all know how cold it can get on the plane. You’ll never catch me wearing those boring blacks and blues. As conventional and classic as I am with my clothes, I like to go completely crazy with my socks. I love bright stripes, rainbow colours, quirky prints and patterns. They really do make me feel happy.
A Statement Watch
A man is judged by the watch he wears. It may sound frivolous but this is my belief. When it comes to travel, the Seiko Astron happens to be one of my all time favourite watches. If you’ve read my blog earlier, when I reviewed the Astron, you would see why I love to travel with it. Its GPS function hooks up with multiple satellites and automatically adjusts itself to the time zone that you are in. Imagine landing into an exotic locale, and not having to wind your watch back and forth to the local time.
A Smart Stroller is Indispensable
When I travel, I try to stay as light as possible, especially when it comes to my hand luggage. I can’t bear the thought of lugging around cumbersome, heavy bags, through massive international airport terminals. Lately, I have been breezing through some of my favourite international airports with this ultra-stylish American Tourister hard stroller, which is effortless to carry around thanks to its four wheels. Needless to say, the colour makes quite a statement.

Stay Well Groomed
It is so important to step off the aircraft, after a long-haul flight, looking absolutely impeccable and perfectly groomed. For that, you need to carry all your travel size grooming essentials – lip balm, moisturizer, toothbrush, cologne, deodorant and hand santizer – in a chic case that makes you want to open it and use all the products. Stepping off a flight, looking like you’ve tumbled out of a laundry machine, shabby and crumpled, is completely unacceptable. This American Tourister toilet kit is simple, sophisticated and packs in all my grooming essentials.
My Kindle, My Best Friend
I never travel ANYWHERE without my Kindle. It literally has been my best travel companion in the past year. Go through my Instagram account (@urbaneyebyrg) and you will see tons of pictures of my Kindle, placed next to my inflight cup of coffee or flute of champagne. A good book, and a long flight…BLISS!
