I can officially say that I have discovered India’s most luxurious breakfast. All you urban luxury aficionados will be disappointed to know that there’s no champagne and eggs Benedict here, nor are there lavish, gilded breakfast rooms brimming with liveried staff. Nature lovers, on the other hand, will be thrilled to know that this breakfast offers the most interesting luxury of all — a complete immersion into the lap of nature.
I was in the foothills of the Himalayas recently, at the uber-chic JW Marriott Mussoorie, where I was told that an outdoor breakfast was prepared for me and for my fellow travellers. As excited as I was, I passed it off as just another picnic breakfast, under the shade of an old oak tree. But boy, was I in for a surprise. Read on to find out how it all panned out for me.
Soon, we were on our way, a short 20 minute drive away and we stopped at this deep gorge of sorts, with a rather precarious and steep climb downhill.
Once I got all the way to the bottom, I couldn’t believe my eyes. We were at the bottom of a deep valley, a gorge of sorts, with a Himalayan stream gurgling on right at the middle of the scene. It was SURREAL. Breakfast tables had been laid out in the middle of the stream, YES, you read that right, in the middle of the stream, while the food had been arranged on separate tables along the bank. Here’s what this blissful scenario looked like.
I kicked off my shoes and stepped right into the shin-deep water and walked towards my table. The water was crystal clear and chilling to the bone, springing forth, straight from a source in the Himalayas. The crisp morning sun was out, the weather was fine and it was the right time to settle down for a copious and well-deserved breakfast. I started with a cup of tea…
And then I moved on to the food. The breakfast included the following — fresh fruits, juices, smoothies, yogurts, eggs, bread as well as a few Indian options. As you enjoy your breakfast, the service staff wades through the water, refilling your tea and coffee, and bringing you new stuff.
Here’s how beautifully it is all laid out. I asked the staff how the managed to pull this off. Apparently, they begin setting up this layout from the night before as it takes a lot of effort to transport all this food and furniture down the gorge in time for breakfast.
Two hours went by like a breeze. Enjoying my omelette and toast, as the icy Himalayan brook nudged my submerged feet made for quite an unforgettable experience.
Sufficiently fuelled up, it was time to say goodbye to this pristine spot and commence the arduous trek all the way to the top.
JW Marriott Mussoorie Walnut Grove Resort & Spa’s breakfast in the wilderness is a ‘by request only’ service, which comes at a premium and is not included in your hotel tariff. Needless to say, the luxury of the setting is invaluable.
This breakfast gets my pick for ‘Most Luxurious Breakfast in India’.
Prices starting from INR 16,000 plus taxes, with a minimum of four persons required.
