Beach Shorts: A Versatile Replacement for your regular shorts

Trust me, if I could, I would live in shorts! But social decorum trumps casual comfort, so I have to keep my shorts for my time off!

Here’s the thing, I have always been a ‘traditional shorts’ guy – so khaki, chino-like shorts, beige, brown, navy, burgundy, white (I cannot have enough white shorts). I love them in cotton and linen.

I have never taken to the trend of cropped shorts, nor have I enjoyed the bright printed shorts. In fact, I was not too gung-ho about the tight checked pant trend either. I believe that men should wear something that ends just above the knee and no higher. And please, NO tight shorts!

During my recent trip to Australia, I discovered the ubiquitous ‘Hoff Short’. I saw them at all the stores in Sydney and everyone on the street seemed to be wearing them. I tried to look it up but wasn’t able to find any conclusive information. So I arrived at my own conclusion.

Hoff shorts are a mutant version of beach shorts. A cross between swimming trunks and regular cotton shorts. They’re a bit shorter than traditional shorts, come in a variety of trendy prints. If you’re not into prints, you can even opt for a solid colour, like I did. What I love most about them is that they have a nice cottony feel and do not appear like swimming trunks – which is what many could mistake them for. I repeat, they are NOT swimming trunks.

Here’s what they look like.

Canvas sneakers add the cool factor to this look

If they’re printed, always wear your hoff shorts with a basic tee

Forget those flip-flops! Slip into a pair of canvas sneakers, or summery boat shoes to up the style quotient.

As for shaving/waxing your legs – the world is divided into two camps on this matter. I belong to the side that thinks it’s cool for a guy to have a bit of fuzz on his legs. I’m not a fan of the shiny, waxed leg look. We’ll leave that for the ladies!

And finally, I decided to shop for some hoff shorts and here’s what I chose…beach shorts
